American Mathematics Competition 8

Like mathematical challenges & puzzles? are you in 8th grade?

Try the American Mathematics Competition 8, a nationwide competition developed by the Mathematical Association of America!

Founded in 1950, the AMC is the preeminent math competition for students K-12. Today, over 300,000 students in 50 states and over 30 countries take the AMC to bolster their confidence and passion for math. The AMC 8 is for students grade 8 and below & homeschoolers under 14.5 years old. The format:

  • a paper test

  • 25 multiple-choice questions

  • 40 minutes to work

Questions focus on middle school topics, including:

  • counting and probability

  • estimation

  • proportional reasoning

  • elementary geometry (including Pythagorean Theorem)

  • spatial visualization

  • interpreting graphs and tables

The last few questions may include algebra topics such as linear or quadratic functions and coordinate geometry.

Competition to be held at Baxter Academy for Technology and Science (in downtown Portland) on Wednesday, January 22 12:30 – 2:30 PM.
