OPEN CAMPUS

One advantage of the student experience at Baxter Academy for Technology and Science is being in the heart of Portland. At Baxter, students may choose to explore the city each day during lunch through our Open Campus contract. Many students and staff enjoy accessing the Portland Public Market and the seasonal farmers market to grab a quick bite. Others choose to take advantage of the student lunch deals at various participating eateries, some of which deliver right to our campus. Open Campus Boundaries and Places of interest:

Open Campus is a privilege for students and an opportunity for the greater community to see what wonderful citizens teenagers can be. This is an opportunity for students to be a force for good in the local community. Open Campus does not imply that students are free to travel wherever they wish, however they wish, or whenever they wish.

  • All travel during open campus lunch is by foot ONLY. Use of bikes, scooters, longboards, skateboards, or other transport is not allowed.

  • Students are required to stay in the open campus boundary. This includes:

    • Elm Street (runs from Congress Street at the Public Market House to Marginal Way at Trader Joe’s, passing right by the school)

    • Kennebec Street (cobbled and the old Trolley route) runs behind the school and ends at Whole Foods

    • Marginal Way (runs parallel to Lancaster and has Trader Joe’s and Chipotle on it)

    • Cumberland Ave (halfway up Elm toward Congress, home of Slab Pizza)

    • Congress Street

  • Students out on the open campus are expected to speak and behave appropriately and with awareness of others around them.

  • Students should go out in pairs or a group.

  • Students are expected to watch out for one another. If a student at Baxter seems confused or concerned, please ask them if they are okay. The school number is 207-699-5500. Call anytime and we’ll help.

  • Students must be back in the building on time, and therefore need to plan lunch excursions accordingly.

Students can lose open campus privilege or face disciplinary action for these non inclusive reasons: disrespectful behaviors, not returning to class on time, not abiding by Baxter expectations or city laws and/or ordinances.
