McKinney-Vento Homeless Program

Under the federal McKinney-Vento Act, eligible students who are homeless are afforded the right to a free, appropriate, public education.

If you know of students or families who are:

  • Staying with relatives or friends because they lost their own housing

  • In inadequate conditions (not all utilities turned on, overcrowded, etc)

  • Living in a garage, basement, or other space not designed for sleeping

  • Youths living on their own without a parent or legal guardian

  • Living in an RV, car, tent, or on the street

  • In a shelter or transitional housing

  • In a motel

  • Couch surfing from place to place

Rights under McKinney-Vento:

  • Stay in the school of origin

  • Receive transportation

  • Removal of documentation requirements for enrollment

  • Receive free school meals

  • Unaccompanied youth may give consent for all medical needs

  • All Mckinney-Vento students’ absences must be counted as excused IF RELATED TO HOMELESSNESS

  • Mckinney-Vento students are protected from truancy.
