Letter to our Baxter Community - 1.16.26

Friday, January 16, 2026

Dear Baxter Community,

There has been extensive coverage regarding increased activity of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Portland and Lewiston in the coming week. Some students have expressed worry about these events. I write to share with you the protocols that Baxter employs to keep students safe, as well as to remind students about caring for themselves during open campus lunch.

 We will continue to require:

  • Permission to enter the building: No third party can access our school site without permission from an authorized administrator. We may not grant permission if it would disrupt the learning environment. Adult visitors are asked to identify their business with the school before entering the building.

  • Authorization by me, the Executive Director, or Cicy Po, Head of School, for legal requests for our data or to our facilities based on a judicial warrant.

For Baxter students who are enjoying our open lunch, please know that we have many resources - supportive adults and safe spaces on campus. If you are in the neighborhood, stay alert and ask a grown-up for help if you need.

We ask that you update the Front Office with any changes to your emergency contact information as soon as possible. In addition, we are in regular communication with Baxter Academy’s legal support and Board of Directors to provide resources when necessary and where possible.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have further questions or a need for further resources.

Sincerely,
Anna
