Beyond the Classroom: Building Maine’s Future at Baxter’s Center for Innovation & Technology

Baxter Academy for Technology & Life Sciences  |  Blog Post & Mainebiz Feature Update

If you walk through the doors of Baxter Academy on any given afternoon, you won’t see students sitting quietly behind rows of traditional desks listening to lectures. Instead, you might see a student analyzing water samples alongside a professional marine scientist, a team turning a rough design into a functional 3D prototype, or a local employer presenting a real-world engineering hurdle directly to a room of high school problem-solvers. These moments of curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on discovery are the heartbeat of Baxter. Now, we are preparing to take that model to an entirely new level.

We are excited to share that Mainebiz recently featured our vision in an article titled “Planned center would expand STEM education across southern Maine.” The feature highlights what our planned Center for Innovation & Technology (CIT) will mean—not just for our school, but for students, educators, and employers across our state.

A 10,400-Square-Foot Engine for Exploration

At its core, the CIT is born from a simple realization: modern technology, climate science, and industry are evolving far faster than standard classrooms can keep pace. Public schools face growing pressure to provide modern laboratories, specialized machinery, and authentic industry connections. Our response is a 10,400-square-foot downtown Portland facility designed as a shared regional asset for southern Maine. The center brings together three interconnected learning environments where students can move an idea seamlessly from initial research to physical prototyping and digital security:

·       The Marine Research Lab: Equipped with cold-water tanks, wet-lab utilities, and microscopy to investigate Gulf of Maine ecosystems, water quality, aquaculture, and shellfish science.

·       The Makerspace & Fabrication Lab: Designed for robotics, CAD modeling, 3D printing, composite materials, and advanced prototyping.

·       The Emerging Technologies Lab: Focused on AI, cybersecurity, networking, data science, and media production.

Connecting these specialized spaces is a central Collaborative Hub featuring glass-walled visibility, display areas for ongoing projects, an acoustic recording studio, and a community gathering space. Crucially, the CIT is built to share. Through visiting-school field trips, summer STEM camps serving 30 to 60 students, teacher training academies, and research collaborations, we are putting sophisticated equipment and expertise within reach of learners throughout our region.

We believe education shouldn’t just prepare young people for being in a workforce we can easily predict. it should empower them to be problem-solvers for today and tomorrow. By bringing real-world challenges into the classroom, the CIT connects high school learning directly to sectors driving Maine’s economic future:

·       Aquaculture and marine technology

·       Precision engineering and advanced manufacturing

·       Biotechnology, software development, and cybersecurity

·       Renewable energy and skilled technical trades

Through mentorships, internships, and industry certifications, students will gain technical expertise alongside the human skills every career demands: complex problem-solving, teamwork, clear communication, and adaptability.

This expansion builds on a proven foundation. Baxter brings a 97% four-year graduation rate, 91% postsecondary readiness, and active partnerships with more than 50 regional organizations, universities, and industry leaders. It’s the same spirit of innovation that led Baxter’s Outliers Robotics Team 5687 to become New England Champions and rank #10 globally out of 4,000 teams.

To turn this vision into reality, we have launched a $3 million campaign to fund facility build-outs, specialized lab equipment, and regional programming. Opportunities range from community gifts and corporate sponsorships to major leadership naming gifts for our specialized laboratories. We are also inviting industry advisors to help align our lab designs and project curricula with evolving workforce needs.

We are deeply grateful to Mainebiz for spotlighting this project, and we invite you to read the full Mainebiz article or explore our CIT campaign materials.
