Work Permit Guidelines

Maine Department of Labor indicates that any student under 16 must have a work permit to be legally employed.

In order to qualify for a work permit, the student must be:

  • Enrolled in school;

  • Not habitually truant or under suspension; and

  • Passing a majority of their courses

To obtain a work permit:

Once a student and employer have agreed to terms of employment, the student must bring ALL of the following completed documents to the main office at Baxter Academy:

1. Work Permit Application

  • The permit must be signed by the parent/guardian and employer BEFORE we receive them.

2. One of the following documents (for proof of age): 

  • Certified copy of Birth Certificate or Baptismal record

  • Passport showing date of birth

  • Physicians’ Certificate

Baxter Academy will submit the forms to the State of Maine. Approved permits will be returned to students upon receipt. Students are not allowed to start working until the application is approved.
