Dear Students and Families in Grades 10-12,

It is time to get back to Baxter! We cannot wait to have you among our community of learners - and we are planning for your arrival.  Along with this welcome letter, this packet contains quite a bit of information and several forms. Sit down, have some tea or lemonade, and go through the items together.  If you have questions about anything, don’t hesitate to call.

The first day for students in grades 10-12 is Tuesday, September 4 - at Deering Oaks Park in Portland.  Students should bring a lunch. The day will begin at 8:25 and end at 2:20, just like a regular school day, but school buses will be dropping off students directly at Baxter.  If you drive your student to school, please drop them off at Baxter at 8:25.

The Deering Oaks day will give our Baxter school community a chance to reconnect.  You’ll also get to meet with us, your principals. We’ll be working as a team to ensure that every student experiences a high quality STEM-focused education in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Before you get back to your summer, we do have a little thinking assignment for you.

These are key words from the Baxter Academy mission and vision statements.

What do they mean to you?  And, even more important, what will you do to make them real?

initiative    perseverance    collaboration        reflection

impact     perspective        curiosity         conscience

creativity     rigor             community

We’re looking forward to the collective learning adventures that are in store for us in 2018-19 and can’t wait to see where your Baxter adventure takes you!  We know you’ll do great things.

Sincerely,

Angie Taylor                        Angela Atkinson Duina

2018-2019 Student Schedule Changes Form

2018-2019 Daily Schedule Change: Reminder

The administration has collaborated with students and teachers to revise the current “bell” schedule (see below) in a way that will allow us to better implement our academic program. The new schedule protects student learning time and will also provide much-needed time for faculty to collaborate on curriculum that supports the mission and vision of our school. You’ll notice that school starts at 8:25 am this year. A related change is that the school building will now be open starting at 8:00 am in the morning for students. Students who need to be dropped off earlier, should be dropped at an alternative location until it is time to walk to school.  (Mr. Bagel on Congress opens at 7am and Coffee ME Up on Cumberland opens at 6am.)

Open Campus Privileges

In nice weather, students will go off campus for lunch, go to Kennedy park to play basketball or ultimate frisbee, and/or go for a run around Back Cove. When going off campus, students should be aware of their surroundings and act safely.  Students and parents should both be aware of Baxter’s off campus contract obligations and guidelines:

All students going off campus for lunch, must fill out this form. Please review the off campus map with your child. Students are advised to stick to the areas noted on the map and to travel with at least one person. We also suggest that at least one person in the group carry a phone. Once students leave the building, they are no longer under direct supervision of Baxter staff.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable or unsure of something that you see or are experiencing, do not hesitate to return to school or call for assistance.
