Anytime/Anywhere Learning - December 3rd

Anytime/Anywhere Learning days are opportunities for professional development for teachers.  Students do not report to school on this day - but they should be engaged in learning. Some suggestions: visit colleges, plan a job shadow, tour a museum, volunteer. Please be sure to record your learning experience on this form. The data collected here is used in our annual reporting to the Charter Commission.

Snow Days = Learning Days

Due to the great distances many of you travel to get here each day, we are careful to take safety into account as we enter the season of snow and slush. To compensate for the snow days Baxter accrues each year, we have worked closely with the Charter Commision to build a snow day learning plan. This year, we will be able to earn back up to five snow days for every day that 80% of all students log their schoolwork from home. The first snow day of the year is always a freebie, but after that, expect teachers to send out short assignments for their classes no later than 8:30am.

Winter Clothing Drive

Help prepare New Mainers arriving from Afghanistan, Congo, Kenya, and Burundi for winter. From now until November 30th, Baxter will be collecting boots, coats, mittens, scarves, hats, and gloves of all sizes to donate to Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement program. Donated items can be brought to the front office, or your child’s advisory. Thank you to sophomore Kimberly Cough for organizing this drive!

Parent Advisory Feedback Survey

Thank you to those of you who made time to complete the Parent Advisory Feedback Survey. Your feedback is invaluable; we will continue to leave the survey open for more families to participate. Please look for updates and opportunities soon as we identify ways we can strengthen our communication with you.

Slate Training - Update

Thank you to those families who were able to attend the Slate training meeting on Thursday evening. We will be holding another training on November 29th at 6pm. You can RSVP here. In the meantime, we’ll be looking for ways for you to video conference this session. You can also view the slideshow presentation from the training here. Questions about Slate can be directed to

Winter CSA at Baxter - Daybreak Growers Alliance

Baxter is a winter pickup site for Daybreak Growers Alliance CSA shareholders. Beginning December 5th, DGA will be delivering local produce, dairy, bread, and meat every two weeks by 2pm. If you would like to learn more about their flexible CSA program, head to their website.

  • Inclement Weather - Communication Prep: We’ve had our first snow day of the season, and luckily, based on storm patterns, we were able to give everyone ample notice. However, in the event that the call needs to be made in the early morning hours, we recommend signing up for Baxter text alerts: Please text the message @75lan to the number 81010 to enroll.

  • Picture Retake Day - November 27: Even if you do not plan on ordering prints, you need to get your photo taken for your free school ID. Your school ID is recognized as a form of identification for testing admission, discounts on admissions to events, student rates on food, etc. Please ask your advisor to alert the front office that you will be getting your photo taken on the 27th.

  • SEMI High Tech U - 3 Day workshop with ON Semiconductor and SMCC (Dec 3-5): Three days of interactive workshops on everything from microchips to chemistry to post-high school planning. This is a great opportunity for 10th-12th graders to learn about STEM careers and the specific skills required for success in those field. To learn more, email

  • Travel to Mexico with StudentReach! StudentReach exists to develop the potential of students through empowerment, coaching, mentoring, and volunteering. Baxter students and faculty interested in planning a spring trip through StudentReach should contact Marilyn Melton at

  • Baxter Ski Bus to Shawnee Peak - Thursdays, January 24th-February 25th (no bus during February vacation): Students will be transported from Baxter to Shawnee Peak by Custom Coach buses. • Thank you so much to those of you who were able to attend our Postsecondary Planning presentation during SLCs.  We have posted our presentation and notes online here.  It contains useful information on what Juniors can do this year to prepare for college and careers.  Many of these “to do” items (like taking the most challenging courses in which you can be successful and getting help in your classes when you need it) apply to 9th and 10th graders, too!

  • We’ll be meeting with juniors on Monday, November 19th to talk about Early College options.  Juniors and Seniors (and, in some special cases, 9th and 10th graders, too) can take courses to earn college credits and get assessed on Baxter graduation standards at many local colleges for a greatly reduced rate.  Spring semester course offerings are online now. You can look at this form for more information, to find links to course lists and applications, and to find costs.  Please email your student’s counselor with any questions. Some programs are open for registration now, and some open up after Thanksgiving.

  • All families - if concerns about progress towards graduation arose at SLCs - or any time - or if other questions come up that we can help with, please email your student’s counselor so we can start a conversation about ways to support you and your student.
